Overview Many genealogists have accumulated masses of related information. Often,
after many years of research a genealogist or family historian wishes to have
his research preserved in some format.
Quintin Publications is a full service genealogical publisher and
distributor and, as such, is in a position to help all genealogists and family
historians attain that goal. We can provide services
that will bring your research to market in either book or CD-ROM format, and
many times, at no cost to you!
The Prospective Work If you are seeking a publisher you are probably in one of the following situations:
- You have a manuscript that is already prepared for publication
- You have an out-of-print book that you wish to bring back into print
- You have extracted information from some valuable genealogical source and want to have it published
- You, or your group, would like to reprint a book of local interest and are looking for a publisher to reprint it
Marketability Not all books have the same appeal. A genealogy book about the descendants of John Bien and Mary Smith (your grandparents) have limited appeal outside their immediate descendants while a book of all the Smiths in the United States has a huge appeal. This fact must be taken into consideration when having a book published by Quintin Publications.
Our many years of experience have told us that the broader the topic and the further back in time the more the appeal will be. A listing of Rhode Islanders in the Revolutionary War will certainly have more potential readers than a list of Rhode Island soldiers who fought in the Korean War. We have found that the books that sell the most are:
Extractions of births, marriages, deaths or other vital statistics from all areas (the broader the better)
One name studies
Censuses, funeral home records, newspaper extractions, especially those not already widely available on the Internet or on microfilm
Certain how-to guides. Dictionaries of related terms, research in ... etc
Town or county histories with a substantial genealogical content
Overview Genealogical Publications is an American company based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. We have been in business more than 25 years and began our business with a specialty in French-Canadian genealogical and historical material. While French-Canada is still our special interest we do publish, stock and distribute a wide range of books and CDs from all areas of interest. Our main method of distribution is through our web site, one of the largest, if not the largest web site selling genealogical products. We constantly update our site - usually on a daily basis, and regularly submit the site to more than 1500 international Internet search engines assuring the widest possible audience for our products.
Audience Our target audience for books and CD-ROMS are genealogists, historians, libraries and genealogical societies. We regularly send e-mail notifications to such interested persons and do make targeted mailing to individuals and societies that might be interested in certain publications. Genealogical Publications usually has a presence at most major genealogical conventions and has been a full page advertiser in Genealogical Helper and other such Quintin Publications.
Getting Started Genealogical Publications suggests contacting us with your idea before you begin formatting and formulating your publication. We request that you contact us as soon as possible if you wish to consider Genealogical Publications as your publisher. Our phone number is 1-904-375-1113 or you can e-mail us at info@quintinpublications.com . Please do not send any unsolicited manuscripts, photos or art work before contacting us.
Acceptance of Manuscripts We would like to accept all book proposals for publication but it is sometimes impossible if we cannot effectively market at least 100 copies of the printed book, however, if you have a manuscript that we feel has marketability as a CD-ROM we will consider that medium as it is much less expensive to produce than a printed version.
All acceptances of manuscripts, are, of course, tentative and dependant upon the acceptance of our editorial committee and a signed contract. The review process can usually take 30 days so please be patient. We will send the recommendations of the editorial committee by e-mail and/or US mail. Our typical responses are:
Royalties Our publishing contract is quite standard. Genealogical Publications normally pays a royalty of 15% - 20% in exchange for the publishing rights to the work. This royalty is based upon the actual selling price of the books or CD-ROMs, both wholesale and retail. Royalties are paid in US funds and paid quarterly in April, July, October and January. The author further receives 5 free copies of the book or CD-ROM and is able to purchase additional copies at Genealogical Publication's normal wholesale discount.
Acceptable Formats If your manuscript is accepted by Genealogical Publications you will have to provide us with at least one of the following:
the manuscript in an electronic format such as WordPerfect or MSWord
a camera-ready copy
in the case of a reprint an existing book or reprint
a typed manuscript
