Explorers & Guides |
From Pierre Gaultier de la Vérendrye , the "discoverer of the Canadian West" and Marie-Anne Gaboury , the first French-Canadian woman in the west to Étienne Provost , who is credited with discovering the Great Salt Lake, these books contain pathfinders and guides, including Toussaint Charbonneau , who, with his Indian wife Sacagawea accompanied Louis and Clarke in their expedition across the continent in 1804-1806. |
| Fur Traders & Businessmen | Lured west by the fur trade, many French-Canadians made their mark in this industry, including François-Victor Malhiot in Wisconsin, Gabriel Franchère at Astoria and Jean-Baptiste Cadotte at Sault-Sainte-Marie. In addition to these traders, men such as Prudent & Victor Beaudry contributed to the development of California, François-Xavier Aubry led wagon trains to Santa Fe, where Louis Robidoux was a miller before developing Riverside, California. |
| Métis | The Métis, French-Canadian and Indian "half-breeds" are well represented in these three volumes, as well. In addition to Louis Riel , whose legendary exploits in the Red River Rebellion and North-West Rebellion made him both revered and reviled, there are also biographies on Gabriel Dumont , Riel's adjutant-general, Ambroise-Dydime Lépine , and Patrice Beaudry , the first French Métis priest in the West. |
| U.S. Pioneers | Several French-Canadians left their names on the map of the western United States. Julien Dubuque left his legacy in Iowa, the memory of Jacques Laramie continues in Wyoming, "Saint" Joseph Robidoux is remembered in Missouri, Étienne Provost had his name shortened in Utah and Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parent saw his settlement grow into the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. François-Marie Bissot de Vincennes marked the French presence in early Indiana and Salomon-Laurent Juneau , the founder of Milwaukee, saw his son Joseph plant the family name on the map of Alaska. |
| Priests and Clergy | A people of faith, the French-Canadians were accompanied west by their priests and missionaries. Joseph-Norbert Provencher evangelized the Red River Settlement, becoming the first bishop of Saint-Boniface. He was ably followed by Alexandre-Antonin Taché , the first archbishop in the west and defender of French-Canadian rights. The brothers François-Norbert and Augustin-Magloire Blanchet preached in the early settlements of Oregon and Washington, setting the stage for the Catholic faith in the Pacific Northwest. Albert Lacombe , whose exploits in the western wilderness are prodigious, earned the nickname "the black-robed voyageur." |
